June 2018: Volkswagen is the number one brand in the UK for the first time

Added: 09 July 2018

June was a hugely successful month for Volkswagen as a brand as they managed to become the top-selling marque during a monthly period for the first time!

To highlight the significance of this occasion, the last time the number one brand (during a single month) was not either Ford or Vauxhall was well over a decade ago when Austin Rover sold enough Metros, Maestros, and Montegos in four weeks to reach the number one spot.

Not only did Volkswagen reach the top of the podium during June, they were the only car brand to feature THREE cars in the top ten selling models list with Golf, Polo, and Tiguan.

Here’s the full picture:

  1. Ford Fiesta: 8,900
  2. Volkswagen Golf: 6,873
  3. Vauxhall Corsa: 6,076
  4. MINI: 5,839
  5. Volkswagen Polo: 5,494
  6. Ford Focus: 4,840
  7. BMW 3 Series: 4,002
  8. Nissan Qashqai: 3,939
  9. Volkswagen Tiguan: 3,527
  10. BMW 1 Series: 3,383

Three fast facts:

  • Golf is the UK’s second best-selling car in June as well as year-to-date, outselling the Focus, Astra and other popular models
  • Volkswagen’s market share climbs from 9.30% (June 2017) to 9.88%. Year-to-date we move from 7.71% to 8.63%
  • Volkswagen’s registrations for the month are up by 2.58%, outperforming the figure for the whole market (-3.50%)
