Volkswagen set for new Tiguan SUV

Added: 30 October 2015

The German manufacturer has its eyes set on improving their Tiguan model with a new, more spacious, economical and luxurious model.

Volkswagen look to push on with their crossover/SUV range to keep ahead of key rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Renault Kadjar and Mazda’s CX-5.

The latest version of the Tiguan boasts a stunning new crisp look, heavily inspired by the new Golf and Passat models.  The Crossover will sit on VW’s new MQB platform which they are swiftly extending across their expansive range.  When it comes to dimensions this means the new Tiguan will be 60mm longer and 33mm lower than its predecessor which gives it lower and more stylish stance on the road.  In line with Volkswagen’s ethos the newest Tiguan is somewhat more evolutionary than revolutionary with sharp details and sleek lines that are synonymous with the German brand.  Crisp LED daytime lights and larger alloys give the new Tiguan a more imposing look.

Thanks to the aforementioned new platform the Tiguan will boast 29mm extra of rear kneeroom whilst luggage space has increased by an impressive 145 litres to a staggering 615 litres, and that’s before you fold the rear seats which then extends to a whopping 1655 litres.  Step inside the Tiguan and it takes a similar theme to the exterior where you find a heavily Golf and Passat inspired interior.

Open up the bonnet and the Tiguan delivers a range of familiar VW Group engines including a 114bhp 1.6 litre diesel unit or 148bhp, 178bhp and 217bhp 2.0 litre diesel options whilst it’s expected there will also be a 1.4 litre and 2.0 litre diesel petrol version available in front or four-wheel drive.

On top of these VW are expected to preview a GTE plug-in hybrid version using the same power output as the Passat GTE, blending a 154bhp 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor to deliver 215bhp.  The German giants have emphasised that this hybrid model will be capable of delivering 149mpg and CO2 emission of just 42g/km whilst the electric motor alone is capable of 30 miles.

It appears there are more exciting times on the horizon for Volkswagen’s crossover range so keep your eyes peeled for all the latest details on the new Tiguan GTE.
