The brand-new VW Golf 8, we feel, comes packed with some very innovative features that really enhance both your driving pleasure and convenience simultaneously.

For instance, some of these for you to consider are:

Digital Cockpit

The Golf 8's digital cockpit replaces its traditional analogue dials with a customisable, high-resolution display.

You can choose between different views, including navigation, driver assistance information, and more, allowing you to keep essential data directly in your line of sight.

The digital cockpit is a clear and standout feature in the Golf 8 which really does help to add to the overall build quality of its interior as well by some distance.

IQ.DRIVE

Another feature we really loved was this suite of driver assistance systems, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic jam assist.

This is because these features work together to make driving the new Golf 8 easier and safer, particularly on long motorway journeys or in congested traffic especially.

The IQ.DRIVE system, for instance, is part of the Golf 8’s standard equipment, which really does, in our view, help to make it stand out in the compact car segment, especially when it comes to looking at safety and convenience in a new car.

Infotainment System

When you step inside, you will notice the new infotainment system that comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is the central hub for all your connectivity needs.

For instance, it supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it very easy to stay connected and entertained on the go.

We were also very impressed with the system as it was very responsive and also included navigation, real-time traffic updates, and Bluetooth connectivity as well.

Consequently, the infotainment system in the Mk8 Golf also features sensitive touch sliders, which replace many physical buttons, giving the dashboard a very clean and modern look overall as well.

Ambient Lighting

The interior of the Golf 8 can also be customised with up to 30 different ambient lighting colours, allowing you to easily and quickly set the mood you want inside the car.

So, whether you prefer a cool blue for nighttime drives or a warm orange for a cosy feel, the interior can be what you make it.

Heads-Up Display

The optional heads-up display then projects key driving information onto the windshield, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road.

For instance, it can show your speed, navigation directions, and driver assistance alerts, making your driving experience safer and more focused as a result.

Consequently, overall, the front & side profile of the Golf 8 is designed, in our opinion, to look modern and efficient, with a very strong sense of purpose when you are on the road especially.

Rear Design

Moving to the rear of the Volkswagen Golf 8, one of the things you will notice is how the design is equally impressive.

For instance, it features new, distinctive LED taillights that are slim and wrap around the sides really well, which in turn give the car a wide, stable look.

The back window is also neatly integrated, and the roof has a slight spoiler, adding to the sporty feel.

Moving to the bumper is well-defined with subtle lines, and there are reflectors on each side, adding to the car's safety and style as well.

So, whether you are looking for a car that's very economical to run or one that offers you more spirited driving dynamics, there really is an engine option available to suit your exact needs.

For instance, the Golf GTE is the plug-in hybrid option that combines both high performance with great fuel efficiency along with a four-wheel drive system, making it an ideal choice for drivers who do a lot of miles and want the largest range and performance with a top speed of 140 MPH and a 0 to 60 MPH in only 6.7 seconds for instance.

Engine Options

Another thing we were impressed with is the VW Golf 8 engine, fuel type, and power output options that are available. For instance, it comes with a variety of engines designed to meet different driving needs, offering you a balance of performance, efficiency, and range, giving you the option to choose the engine you want.

For instance, you have many options to choose from, including:

1.0 TSI Petrol Engine

This turbocharged petrol engine is more ideal for city driving, as it offers you a good balance between power and fuel efficiency.

For instance, it can deliver up to 110 horsepower for you, making it peppy yet very economical at the same time, with a combined fuel consumption of approximately 54 MPG.

This engine is also one of the key reasons the running costs of the Golf 8 are so competitive, especially when compared to comparable cars as well.

1.5 TSI Petrol Engine

Instead, if you want a more robust 4-cylinder engine, then the 1.5 TSI is available with or without mild-hybrid technology.

This produces 150 horsepower, which in turn delivers you a more dynamic driving experience while maintaining its excellent fuel economy - with a combined fuel consumption of around 50 MPG, for instance.

Its mild-hybrid system, for instance, further improves your efficiency by recovering energy during braking and converting this back into energy, which it stores in its onboard battery pack.

2.0 TDI Diesel Engine

For those who prefer diesel engines, the 2.0 TDI engine is a strong choice here for you.

This is because it is known for its long-distance efficiency, as this engine offers you 115 horsepower or 150 horsepower, depending on the exact variant you choose, with outstanding fuel economy figures of around 70 MPG.

Consequently, these engines are ideal for drivers who frequently cover longer distances, thanks to their low CO2 emissions and impressive fuel economy overall.

eTSI (Mild-Hybrid) Engine

Its mild-hybrid eTSI engines then combine the 1.0 or 1.5 TSI petrol engines with a 48V electric system, providing you with smoother acceleration and improved fuel efficiency as a direct result.

The eTSI variants are also particularly beneficial on city streets where stop-and-go traffic is a lot more common.

This technology also contributes to the Golf 8’s competitive running costs as well.

GTE (Plug-in Hybrid) Engine

Then, finally, we will cover the GTE engine, which is the most environmentally friendly option you can decide to buy, as it offers you up to 245 horsepower.

This engine, in turn, gives you an electric car version thanks to its combination of a petrol engine with an electric motor, allowing for electric-only driving for up to 37 miles.

The GTE version is then ideal for city commuters, as it offers you zero-emissions driving in electric mode only and impressive performance when both power sources are combined as well.

Performance and Handling

When it comes to its handling, we think that the VW Golf 8 continues Volkswagen’s tradition by offering you a car that is really as enjoyable to drive as it is practical.

For instance, the steering is fairly light at low speeds and gains some weight as you pick up the pace. It also has very precise steering, thanks to its electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering system which is then combined with a MacPherson Strut for its front suspension, and Multi-link for its rear suspension in tandem give you a very comfortable ride, and well-balanced handling as well - both of which make it a pleasure to drive on both city streets and winding country roads.

Dynamic Chassis Control

For those who prefer a more dynamic driving experience, the optional Dynamic Chassis Control system can also adjust your damping settings to suit different driving conditions as well.

This can go from relaxed cruising to sporty driving, and this feature really does enhance your driving experience, making the Golf 8 very adaptable to various road conditions as a result.

Drive Modes

The Golf 8 also features selectable driving modes, allowing you to tailor your car’s performance to your mood or driving conditions that you are facing as well.

For instance, you can choose from Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual modes to adjust the throttle response, steering weight, and suspension settings to get you the best ride you want.

For instance, in Sport mode, the Golf 8 becomes more responsive and engaging, while Eco mode helps maximise fuel efficiency.

So, whether you choose the base model with front-wheel drive or the all-wheel-drive VW Golf R, you will appreciate the car’s excellent driving dynamics as much as we did.

Safety Features

Safety is also a very noticeable and top priority in the VW Golf 8, and the car is equipped with a wide range of features designed to protect you and your passengers as a result.

Consequently, these features have helped the Golf 8 achieve top ratings in crash tests, such as the 5-star safety rating it achieved in the Euro NCAP crash tests and the 5-star safety rating it also achieved from ANCAP, making it one of the safest cars in its class as a result.

This is in part due to it being able to come equipped with:

Front Assist with City Emergency Braking

This system uses radar and camera technology to monitor the road ahead of you.

If it then detects an imminent collision with a vehicle or pedestrian, it can automatically apply the brakes to help avoid or reduce the impact.

This feature is part of the Golf 8's comprehensive safety package.

Lane Assist

Lane Assist then helps you keep the car centered in its lane on motorways especially.

If the system detects that you're unintentionally drifting out of your lane, it gently steers the car back to the centre to help avoid accidents from occurring as a result of lane drift.

Adaptive Cruise Control

This feature maintains a safe distance from the car in front by automatically adjusting your speed for you.

It’s particularly useful on long motorway journeys, reducing the need for you to make constant speed adjustments.

Adaptive cruise control is also standard in many of the Golf 8’s higher trim levels as well.

Park Assist

Parking in tight spaces is then made easier with Park Assist, which can automatically steer the car into a parking spot for you using the car's parking sensors.

All you need to do is control the brake and accelerator while the car handles the steering - we found it very simple and intuitive to use.

Other safety features include a driver fatigue detection system, traffic sign recognition, and a rear-view camera, all contributing to a safer driving experience.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Lane Assist
  • Front Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring
  • Emergency Assist

Financing

If buying a brand-new Golf 8 outright is not for you, and instead, you are looking for manageable monthly payments, then car finance options may be more for you, as these allow you to spread the cost of buying a car over time.

You can also choose from different plans, like Hire Purchase (HP), where you pay monthly and own the car at the end, Personal Contract Purchase (PCP), where you can return, keep, or trade the car after the term ends, to car leasing where you, in essence, rent the car for a number of years and only page for the depreciation over the time period - potentially getting you the best lowest payments as a result.
