Engines and Performance
The new Tayron comes with a large range of engine options to choose from, including, for instance, up to 7 Drive Systems – including eHybrid, eTSI, TSI and TDI.
These include:
- Two plug-in hybrid drives (eHybrid)
- A mild hybrid petrol drive (eTSI)
- Two turbocharged petrol engines (TSI)
- Two turbocharged diesel options (TDI Diesel engines)
Power Output
For their power outputs, these engines can range from 110 kW (150 PS) all the way up to 200 kW (272 PS).
Wheel Drive System
For instance, the purely turbocharged petrol engines - and the most powerful turbocharged diesel engine - all come with 4MOTION All-wheel drive as well, while all other versions have front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive here.
Gearbox
Every Tayron model is also equipped with an automatic Direct-shift Gearbox (DSG), which gives you seamless and lightning-fast gear changes, which in turn helps to improve your driving comfort, fuel efficiency, and performance, all while giving you a smoother and more responsive experience as it does so; especially when you need to accelerate and overtake we should note.
eHybrid Engines
For your two plug-in hybrid models that are available, these give you long electric ranges, which makes them more than ideal for everyday driving - effectively turning the Tayron into an electric car perfect for daily use on just its electric motor alone for many of your journeys.
For longer journeys, you can get an overall range of around 523 miles with low fuel consumption here as well, thanks to these engines using a combination of electric power and traditional fuel.
The basic version also combines a four-cylinder turbocharged engine with an electric motor to produce a system power of 150 kW (204 PS).
The top-of-the-line engine version here then gives you up to 200 kW (272 PS), thanks to a 19.7 kWh battery pack. As a result, Volkswagen estimates its real-world range (WLTP) of its electric range to be over 62 miles, along with the Tayron eHybrid models.
Charging
The battery can also be charged using either of the following:
- Up to 11 kW at an AC wall box or AC charging station
- Up to 50 kW at DC fast-charging stations
eTSI Engine
Looking at its none hybrid engines, first up is the entry-level petrol-powered Tayron, which still gives you a high-tech 110 kW (150 PS) mild hybrid (eTSI) featuring a 48 V belt-driven starter-alternator and Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus).
During braking, its kinetic energy is then recovered via an alternator and stored in a separate 48 V battery helping to increase your range as a result.
The Tayron then uses this energy to switch off the petrol engine during deceleration and downhill driving, saving you fuel and reducing your running costs at the pump as it does so.
The 48 V battery here then supplies all car systems with power even when the combustion engine is turned off fully.
Additionally, we should note that the 48 V system really does help to improve its performance, especially when starting off - giving you an electric boost thanks to the alternator acting as a direct electric drive motor here.
TSI and TDI 2.0-Litre Petrol Engines and Diesel Engines
If instead you opt for the turbocharged petrol (TSI EVO) and diesel engines (TDI EVO) engines, these represent Volkswagen's latest generation of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines and play a key role in the Tayron's drive options available.
The TDI, for instance, comes with a 110 kW (150 PS) and Front-wheel drive, which is very practical and economical at the same time.
The larger TDI engine, thanks to its 142 kW (193 PS), is also very fuel efficient and comes standard with 4MOTION All-wheel drive as well.
The two TSI engines also come with 150 kW (204 PS) and 195 kW (265 PS) and feature All-wheel drive here as well.
Lastly, we should mention that all Tayron 4MOTION models also come equipped with a towing bracket that can tow up to 2,500 kg (braked, 12% gradient), allowing this car to tow very large and heavy caravans as a result.

Gear Shifts
Gear shifts in the Tayron, which always comes with a Direct-shift Automatic Gearbox (DSG), are performed using an intuitive steering column switch which can allow you to select from 3 drive modes, such as:
- Click forward – D (Drive)
- Click back – R (Reverse)
- Tap – P (Park)
